The play, direction and acting did the actors somewhat of an in-the-moment disservice: I assume you would have gotten a thunderous standing ovation, if any of us could move. That was heavy. Exceptionally well done.

The costumes for Daniel allowed for pretty smooth transitions between scenes. It really helped the pacing and helped the audience follow the story. Well done.

I particularly liked the spotlight during the interrogation scene and the flash at the end signaling death. The spotlight made the scene feel more authentic. The flash felt very fresh. With a scene that takes place within a character's mind as he is dying there certainly needs to be a clearly defined end point for the audience to recognize death. The flash was perfect and connected to "going into the light."

The wood flooring fit the haphazard chaotic feeling of war. The design reminded me of bombs and violence, but also fit the office scene. The pattern of circles could easily be a tile floor pattern in some building. The design clearly connected with all scenes in the play.

Sometimes design is most impressive when it's understated. Case in point: when Reeves is dumped from the gurney and drops onto the floor. We hear an emphasized thud over the sound system. It was subtle, but incredibly powerful. It went right through you.

The rap music fit the intensity of the play well. It also appreciated the music/sound affects that built in the tense moments.

All told a solid, thought-provoking piece of theatre. Hard to watch once we realize we are asked to empathize with someone who lacks empathy himself. You're left asking where we should invest our caring, our own emotions? We don't want to be like him, and in the long run cannot be. Still, we pace Reeves through his plight, down to the bitter end and that realization is crucial. The direction and ensemble were tight and the pacing was excellent.

The entire cast did an amazing job! This should be made into an episode on a t.v. show. It deals with several very heavy topics with acting engaging enough to keep you from wanting to shrink away. Whoever wrote this is a masterful writer.

Best use of this difficult space ever! I am in love with the lighted tree made of love notes, and how the resulting seating arrangement just loves the space. This show featured the best sound design I have ever encountered in a theater. There were some genuinely shocking and frightening moments, all enhanced by what I think must have been live sounds, all around the theater, simulating bird bodies crashing onto a rickety house. The balance between design elements - set, lighting, sound and costumes - was extraordinary.

[Playwright] Steven Dietz
This is, indeed, a wonderful play. Infuriating in it's ambiguity but nuanced and layered. It keeps placing demanding questions before you that make you uncomfortable in the answering. I have longed for a time machine so often in the last two decades. This play tells me they are worthless but as a thought problem or a conversation piece. The choice you make in the moment is key. The rest is chaff.
ACT Theatre
Bloomsday
[Production]
Many are annoyed with the contrivance of a "happy ending" as there is no such thing in real life. In this case I wished it was different--I wish the happy moment was unilateral. In this play, history is rewritten for the younger characters (or so I surmised) but the older, those with whom I felt the greater kinship, are left adrift. I feel those characters and the audience earned some aspect of solace over the cold ambiguity with which the play left us. Still, I hear this play telling me not to pass opportunities but to seize a moment, to take that day and make it mine and to live without regrets. For me, the final question I was left with, the one that was left unanswered, was which timeline do I chose--I can't have both.

[Scenic] Robert Dahlstrom
Lovely design. I both love and hate the elevator set changes necessary for the Allen Theatre. There is something magic about tables and chairs rising up into place, but having seen so many plays in this space over the last year, I've started to see the challenges and limitations to using this space. Still, I am impressed with how ACT's designers make work. I loved the stones in the pavement and the posts. There is realism and magic and the same time.

[Director] Malika Oyetimein
It was fluid, cinematic, immersive and engaging. I was a little confused at times, but I caught on to the different narrative concepts eventually. At one point when a character was outside in the "cold", I swear I felt a chilling breeze. Was it the lighting? Acting? A subtle sound queue? A hidden wind machine? Either way I'll credit the direction for that.
Intiman Theatre
Bootycandy
[Director] Malika Oyetimein
The fluidity of motion, sound and light onstage coupled with the stakes between the characters and their circumstances... It was all on fire! I think Malika Oyetimen put it best in her Director's note, "With this show I hope you will allow yourself to step inside someone else's shoes, even if it makes you uncomfortable. You have a right to be uncomfortable here, - lean into it. That's where the message is, where the work gets done." She achieved this a thousand times over in her direction. Brilliantly done.

The acting in Bootycandy was that of incredible skill and vulnerability. It takes guts to morph from the subtly absurd moments in life to the darker and more sinister objectives behind them. All the actors wrangled this feat flawlessly. Embracing the stereotypical and finding joy and truth within it. Allowing themselves to transform without judgement, embracing the dark and the light right before our eyes.

Booty Candy at Intiman was a damn fine piece of theatre. A fantastical glimpse at those strange moments in life that you never thought would define you, but ended up as the cornerstones of identity. How each individual and their story is unique, but still similar in essence to our collective humanity. Sutter's journey touches the hilarity, the confusion, the pain of coming to be and celebrates the joy of living that somehow transcends it all. Engaging, hilarious and heartbreaking. The lighting, sound, set, direction, THE ACTING! - all lent itself to bringing the life of Sutter, raw and true, before our eyes.

A solid children's christmas show. The actors did a great job of keeping the Peanuts magic alive during the meet and greet. Really enjoyed that Schroder and Pig Pen provided all the musical accompaniment. Kids in the audience were having a blast. Truly the movie brought to life.

Children's Hour, The

This production was extremely well-done, well-acted, hard hitting and relevant to all of us:) As a 65 year-old lesbian who has lived through many of the social/cultural taboos addressed by the play, I left crying and found myself emotionally exhausted - - the play re-opened many wounds that I thought I had more lovingly put behind me!! Lies are so vile and powerful!

[Playwright] Seayoung Yim
Really laugh out loud funny. There was punchline after punchline The dialogue told the story really well and provided a lot of background knowledge for the characters. It was easy to distinguish the character perspectives whether they had a more western cultural reference or were more traditional. I liked how the characters played off of each other. No one was 100% right or wrong.
Annex Theatre
Do It For Umma
[Playwright] Seayoung Yim
Seayoung is my new hero. The script was funny for white audiences, more so for first generation immigrants and doubly funny for Korean-Americans. It tapped into the unique, convoluted relationship between immigrant parents and their children in a deep, relateable way. She built well-rounded characters who each had their own set of struggles. I want to get my hands on the script if only to read the stage directions and pronunciation guide.

Every moment you were on stage, you made it an engrossing, tender one. You were exactly right for the part. I shed some tears (I wasn't the only one), and I'm not a crier. Congratulations on a beautiful performance! I hope to see you on many more stages here.
These stories need to be told, and told well -- then maybe someday we can tell them with different endings. For now, a reminder to invest in our youth, families and communities. Thank you all for sharing that.
Would love to see more shows written from the radio files premise, if the playwright thinks the (fictional) tapes have more stories to tell.
